Slaying the Beast, Becoming the Monster: Axelorate's Metalcore Epic 'Bujang Senang'
Florida multi-instrumentalist Axelorate delivers a fierce, 170 BPM mythic journey exploring the thin line between justice and madness.

There is a classic, tragic warning in heavy music: when you hunt monsters, you have to be careful not to become one. On his savage third release, 'Bujang Senang', Florida guitarist Axelorate translates a terrifying legend from Sarawak into a towering melodic metalcore piece. Clocking in at a blistering 170 BPM, the track is a masterclass in narrative tension, matching high-octane guitar work with a psychological descent into obsession.
The song draws directly from the legend of Bujang Senang, a massive crocodile spirit rumored to haunt the Lupar River. In the original myth, the creature was once a proud warrior who, after losing his beloved, took the form of a giant crocodile to exact revenge. Axelorate spins a tragic personal tale within this folklore, charting a warrior's quest to avenge his wife's murder, only to slowly lose his grip on reality as he begins to understand the beast he swore to destroy.
The Anatomy of a Mythological Tragedy
From the opening lines, 'Bujang Senang' drops the listener straight into a devastating emotional storm. The story starts with a violent clash, where an innocent attempt to calm the beast ends in tragedy:
'She thought she’d bring transcendence / Innocent girl, flesh tore from bone / Now a tribute for your vengeance'
This loss sets the main character on a path of single-minded retribution. Yet, as the journey goes on, the physical battle morphs into a fight for his own sanity. The protagonist struggles to recognize himself in the mirror, realizing that his thirst for revenge is slowly shaping him into the monster he hates.
By the climax of the track, the boundaries between hunter and hunted dissolve completely. The protagonist confronts the tragedy of the spirit's past, screaming, 'Vengeful spirit, we acknowledge what you’ve lost / The one you loved killed before you / By our own hand!' In a final, mind-bending twist, the warrior ends the suffering of the old spirit only to step into its place, taking on the heavy mantle of the beast: 'And now I take your place!'
Crafting the Sound of Madness
For Axelorate, who has spent over 15 years playing guitar, the production was a highly meticulous, hands-on journey. Working inside Ableton, he laid down the song's heavy foundations using DI guitars and the brutal tones of Neural DSP's Gojira X and Soldano X plugins to shape a thick, aggressive wall of sound.
To bring his grand vision to life, Axelorate took a collaborative approach, outsourcing the drums and intense vocals to elite session musicians discovered via Soundbetter and Fiverr. The resulting mix, handled by veteran engineer Matt Dougherty, is exceptionally punchy. The track moves fluidly between crushing, rhythmic guitar riffs and soaring, emotive solos. The central guitar solo is easily the track's proudest moment, striking a brilliant balance between raw speed and melodic storytelling.
With influences rooted in the golden eras of Trivium and Arch Enemy, Axelorate is proving that modern metalcore can still be deeply conceptual and story-driven. 'Bujang Senang' is not just a track to headbang to, it is a fully realized audio-drama that invites the listener to lose themselves in another world.
