Resilience in the Grooves: How Don Ergo Resurrected a Lost 2017 Demo into Soul House Gold

A Dream Deferred by Reality

Behind every great track lies a story, but few carry the emotional weight and sheer resilience found in the return of Micah Goodner, performing under the moniker Don Ergo. A veteran songwriter, composer, and vocalist, Goodner has been writing music since 2005, collaborating with various artists and producers on lyrics, hooks, and melodies. Just as his career began gaining serious traction, life took an unexpected turn.

His wife was diagnosed with a life threatening, rare disease attacking her kidneys, and around the same time, their six year old son was diagnosed with autism. Placing his musical ambitions on hold, Goodner spent the next two decades dedicating himself wholly to his family and his full time job. Yet, he never truly stopped writing, holding onto the hope that his creative path would one day reopen.

Lost Stems, a Email Archive, and Creative Rebirth

In 2017, during a pocket of creative inspiration, Goodner composed 'Can I Be the One'. He combined Magix House samples, custom programmed drums, and a raw vocal demo to capture a specific late night energy. Tragically, a severe computer crash in 2020 wiped out his entire studio setup, erasing the original project files, stems, and multi-track recordings. Devastated by the loss, he initially gave up on music altogether.

Fast forward to 2026, and encouragement from close friends prompted Goodner to dig through his old digital archives. He managed to locate a single, compressed audio bounce of the 2017 demo sent to his own email address. With the original stems completely gone, traditional remixing was impossible, creating a unique technical roadblock.

Embracing AI as a Restorative Tool

To bridge the gap between a degraded 2017 demo file and a competitive 2026 club release, Don Ergo leaned into modern artificial intelligence tools. Rather than using AI to generate art from scratch, Goodner used the technology restoratively, using it to isolate, enhance, and refine the elements trapped inside the single stereo track.

The AI assisted in optimizing tone, tight timing corrections, spatial presence, reverb balance, and modern compression. From there, Goodner exported the restored elements, applied precise surgical EQ, and mastered the track himself. The single went through at least 12 distinct versions before reaching perfection. As Goodner notes, the physical body of the file might be completely different, but the core soul of the 2017 composition remains untouched.

The Sonic Result: A Smooth Late Night Banger

Clocking in at a steady 111 BPM, 'Can I Be the One' is a stellar example of Soul House, beautifully blending smooth, late night R&B vocal storytelling with an infectious dance floor pulse. It carries a heavy influence from mid-2000s icons like Ne-Yo and Usher, mixed with the grand room dynamics of David Guetta and Mike Perry.

The track focuses on the electric feeling of attraction and the desire to truly understand a romantic interest, using the dancefloor as a landscape for authentic connection. The standout feature is undeniably the vocal arrangement and lyricism, serving as a powerful testament to Goodner's decades of experience as a pure songwriter.
