Vinyl, Silver Discs, and Pure Passion: Inside Gelsenkirchen’s Music Corner

You can read all the statistics you want about the current vinyl revival, but you don't really feel it until you walk into a place like Music Corner in Gelsenkirchen-Buer. The moment you step through the door, you just know you’re among people who get it. It’s cozy, there's a great atmosphere, and there's this constant buzz of music lovers coming and going, talking shop right across the counter.

The absolute heart of this place? Ramona and Marcus Jarmuth. If you’re from the area, you might actually recognize them, they managed the record department at the local Saturn for years. When that store closed down, they had a choice to make. With 25 years of music retail experience under their belts, they decided to take the leap into self-employment to celebrate tangible, physical music. And thank god they did. Gelsenkirchen had been missing a real, dedicated record store since 2021, and Ramona and Marcus stepped up to fill that void perfectly.

Tucked away at Königswiese 2, the shop isn’t massive, but the curation is spot on. Vinyl - the "black gold" makes up about half the store, but they also carry a really solid selection of CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays. Whether you’re hunting for rock, pop, jazz, metal, hip hop, or even classical, you’re probably going to stumble across something you didn't even know you needed. Since they regularly buy well-kept private collections, the crates are always full of fresh second-hand finds right next to the brand-new releases.

What I love most is that the CD is getting some respect here, too. It’s kind of fighting the same survival battle that vinyl went through 30 years ago. But as I proved today by walking out the door with a freshly bought CD, physical formats are far from dead.

You just can't replicate this vibe with a Spotify algorithm. If you're on the fence about a record, you can literally just grab a drink, sink into a chair, and give it a spin before you buy it. They even offer a professional vinyl restoration service, a real "pampering program" for your collection. They wash your records professionally and pack them in fresh, lined inner sleeves so they sound as crisp as day one. And if they don’t have exactly what you’re looking for in stock, they’ll just order it for you.

Independent stores like this are the absolute glue of the local music culture. They're run by people who genuinely burn for what they do, and you feel that in every single corner of the room.
