Some songs hit like a warm summer breeze, instantly taking you back to the freedom of late youth and first loves. That is the exact magic UK singer and lyricist Ridgewell captures in his latest track, 'I wanna roll with you'. Wrapped in a dreamy, ethereal atmosphere, the song feels like a cinematic trip to a sun-drenched past, blending modern dream-pop with distinct 1960s sensibilities.
Based in Ipswich, Ridgewell (the project of Haydn Helm) has built a diverse musical catalogue since November 2025. Working closely with local producer Ian Crow, he mixes pop foundations with hints of folk, country, alternative dreampop, and synthwave. In 'I wanna roll with you', this cross-genre approach creates an immersive sonic landscape that stands out in the indie scene.
The Story Behind the Track
Great music often relies on perfect timing. The instrumental core of this track sat in Ian Crow's back catalogue for quite a while. Though it had old lyrics, the song never felt finished. When Ridgewell heard the piece, he unlocked its true potential, writing fresh lyrics and re-imagining the melodies to turn an unreleased studio demo into a vibrant summer track.
The Production Journey
Recorded at Amblin' Man Records using Cubase, the track perfectly balances live elements with electronic textures. Ian Crow tracked the shimmering guitars directly for a clean, bright tone, while using select samples for the synth and drum sections.
Ridgewell's vocals provide the real emotional weight here. The arrangement demands serious control, moving between soft, intimate moments and powerful, long-held notes. Getting these challenging vocal dynamics right in the studio gives the song its striking depth.
Nostalgic Lyricism
Lyrically, the track paints a vivid picture of a blissful past. Ridgewell sings of amber suns, wicker carriers, and daisy-chain necklaces, contrasting these images with lines about the romantic, anarchic eighteen-year-olds on our movie screens. It balances a deep sense of romance with a relaxed, nostalgic groove, making it the perfect soundtrack for warm coastal drives and lazy summer afternoons.
