There is a distinct, visceral magic when a musician handles every single facet of their creation. German solo project Sunken Haunt, spearheaded by multi-instrumentalist Robert Bennecke from Meppen, stands as a defiant monument to the pure DIY spirit with the explosive single 'Iris', a blistering blend of heavy rock, metal, punk, and screamo.
A Fifteen-Year Journey Reaching Its Peak
Bennecke has poured a lifetime of sonic education into Sunken Haunt. While his catalog across various bands is vast, 'Iris' feels like a crowning achievement, standing out as the absolute best piece of music he has ever made. The vocal performance represents a major personal milestone. After stepping away from metal screaming nearly twenty years ago, Bennecke reclaimed his harsh vocal style in 2024 specifically for this project, allowing him to record every track himself without creative compromises.
Sonic Architecture: Heavy, Grit-Laden DIY
Musically, 'Iris' is a heavy masterclass in atmospheric post-hardcore, wearing its influences proudly. Fans of early 2000s genre giants like Thrice, Thursday, and La Dispute will immediately connect with the track's driving rhythm, aggressive riffs, and explosive emotional releases. Clocking in at an energetic 140 BPM, the track delivers pure sonic anger.
The entire project is completely DIY, forged on an aging laptop using Reaper, a basic two-channel interface, a cheap Rode NT1 microphone, and a trusted Gibson SG guitar. Relying on accessible plugins like Ampknob for guitars and EZDrummer3, Bennecke tackled the mixing and mastering himself. The resulting lo-fi, heavy production value isn't a limitation, but a deliberate choice that enhances the authentic, grit-laden charm of the track.
Narrative Depths: Oppression and Resistance
At its core, 'Iris' is an angry story about oppression, rebellion, and protecting what you love. Inspired by the video game '1000XResist', the track explores how a totalitarian political climate impacts individual human relationships, following political activists fleeing an authoritarian home country.
The lyricism reflects this terrifying landscape, shifting seamlessly between political defiance and heavy internal friction. Spoken word components, adapted from the YouTube channel 'Katie and Catburger', add profound depth to the storytelling, framing a brutal struggle against a collapsing world. It is a stark reminder that even in the darkest landscapes, defiance remains the ultimate response.
