Street Culture Takeover: The Funky Monkeys Ignite Telgte
After an eight-year hiatus, the beloved street theater festival is back. We were in Telgte on Saturday night to check it out, and the main attraction was a truly unique, community-powered performance.

The wait is finally over. The historic alleys of Telgte came alive this past weekend as the long-awaited return of the Straßentheatertage (Street Theater Days) took over the city. Under the motto "free and outdoors," the three-day festival was packed with magic, stilt artistry, and spectacular fire shows.
We were lucky enough to be there on Saturday evening to soak it all in. The vibe was just perfect - sunny, crowded with families and friends, all enjoying the free, open-air culture. While there was a lot to see, we really wanted to check out the urban vibe, and Saturday night on the market square did not disappoint.
The main attraction for us was the Berlin-based performance crew, The Funky Monkeys. These four incredible artists are known around the world for their unique blend of comedy, music, breakdance, and world-class acrobatics, even winning huge awards like a silver Junior-Clown in Monte Carlo. Their performance hit exactly the right note: a high-energy mix of heavy beats, jaw-dropping tricks, and smooth hip-hop moves.
But the most special part, and the thing we absolutely loved, was how they made the whole performance feel like a shared experience. This wasn't just a show to watch; it was a show to be part of. Their interactive style with the crowd was awesome, but nothing compared to the finale.
For the big climax, the crew called up 12 brave volunteers from the crowd. We counted them: four groups of three people each stepped forward to take hold of a long rope leading back to the central performance pole. This was not just for show. Each group of three had to hold their rope under serious tension to lock the central mast into place. Their combined strength was what physically allowed the acrobats to safely perform their mind-blowing balancing acts way up in the air.
Seeing the artists perform at that crazy height, completely relying on the audience to keep the structure secure, was the perfect ending to an amazing set. It was a pure moment of shared effort and community connection.
Even after the final applause, the guys kept that same down-to-earth energy. They took the time to hang out, chat with us for a bit, and snap photos with the kids and anyone else who wanted to meet them. It just capped off what was, simply put, a perfectly rounded, fantastic show.
Judging by the massive crowd and the incredible vibe that night, the return of the Straßentheatertage is a massive success. Telgte showed up, and the streets truly came alive. We just hope we don’t have to wait another eight years to feel this kind of community energy again. Telgte, you did great.
