The Unmarked Tapes Cut Through Pretense on 'The Doors of Uncertainty'

Akron songwriter Chris Purcell takes aim at social climbers and shallow titles with a gritty, piano-led track.

The Unmarked Tapes Cut Through Pretense on 'The Doors of Uncertainty'

Chris Purcell runs The Unmarked Tapes out of Akron, Ohio, leaning into a rough, unvarnished Rust Belt sensibility. 'The Doors of Uncertainty' lands on his record Sorta Pressed, a collection built to poke fun at social ladders, high-class appearances, and people who assume a fancy title makes them important.

He tracked the song between Cakewalk and BandLab, stacking piano keys, MIDI parts, guitars, drums, and dry vocals without smoothing down the jagged edges. The whole thing sounds skeptical, restless, and completely unimpressed, using the piano to push the tempo while the layered backing keeps the nervous tension hanging in the room.
